The good old days…

I tend to watch every video that appears from E3 just in case I miss out on a gem of a game but I was horrified by the footage of the new Sonic game on the 360. Once upon a time (if you’re old enough to remember!) Sonic games were all about managing to complete a level in an insane time such as 11 seconds with the skill being taking the right shortcuts and flying effortlessly through the air at the right time and speed avoiding the pits of deadly spikes but now…well now it seems that Sonic has turned into a demonised version of the original tomb raider – just blue and minus the breasts. In the game play demo for the new release I saw Sonic picking up items to solve puzzles that needed weighting down, climbing walls by pressing a climb button (what happened to the springs?!) and loads of quick action button presses to move Sonic out of the path of danger. I must admit I have been ignoring Sonic over the last few years so I am a bit out of touch but seriously what has happened to this spiky blue hedgehog with attitude? All I can do is urge the younger audience to go and find a way to play the older games just so you know where this game started because it was such a long way away from where it currently is, and I am honestly clueless as to where it’s going to end up!

How it all began...

Both Sonic The Hedgehog and Sonic The Hedgehog 2 are available for download on XBL Marketplace. True classics,

Green Hill Zone! I think retro Sonic is from a more innocent gaming time maybe, whereas now it’s all complicated by the extra characters and, erm, love interest… and stuff like that.

    I can’t say I ever tried to complete a level in super-quick time though…

Sonic Adventure was the last true Sonic game for me. Yes it had an open world to explore, but the level’s themselves were just pure Sonic. I kept up until Sonic Heroe’s which in my opinion was a terrible format for a Sonic game. The new game looked pretty good, but I havent seen the E3 video so far. I shall go take a look.

Sounds bloody awful, but I gotta say, it was never about completing a level in an insane time for me… I mean sure you could do that, but I always tried to complete with the most amount of points, rings, extra lives etc.

I’ve never played a Sonic game. Did I miss out or was I spared?

Hmm, I don’t know John. Original, Mega Drive era Sonic was blue sky kind of gaming while more recent versions have added a fair bit of extra stuff on top of that – stuff which is really not needed in my opinion. So you’ve probably avoided a great deal of disappointment by not playing it.

But you could still play old Sonic with the Mega Collection, to compare Sonic then and Sonic now, if you wanted to.

I think Unleashed looks like it will re-capture the original’s element of speed and fun once again, although I agree wih Retro GT, I don’t think the older titles were ever about speed running as such.

The Sonic-wolf thing is a bit worrysome but from what I’ve been reading in interviews and hearing on the grapevine, it sounds like they might have just learned from their mistakes yet.

    Fingers and toes crossed!
