Service with a smile!

It’s not very often that I blog about what’s behind the games, but purchasing games is part of the full-on experience of gaming. Some people preorder everything online and sit impatiently waiting for the post, some people (like myself) play too many games to keep so constantly work on a thrash and trade basis, and others just randomly purchase games whenever and wherever they feel like it. But this blog is about game shop loyalty. Possibly a strange topic, but one I wanted to share.

In the town I live in (Worthing) there are many games shops, some big names, some sole traders etc, so there’s no shortage of where to get your hands on your next gaming fix. I however, have for a couple of years now been dedicated to one shop and one shop only, refusing point blank to purchase anywhere else. This may seem like strange behaviour but it’s all about customer service, and I don’t just mean being polite. As a regular customer, all the Gamestation staff in my town know me, and in many cases, what games I have/have not played. I can walk in and ask for recommendations and they know my back-catalogue well enough to give a good answer. Most people who work in the local game shops seem to not know anything about games, yet these staff are actually gamers, they’re not about the sale, they’ll give a frank and honest opinion whereas most people will just look at me blankly. They’ve done me many favours over the years (especially with my never ending bad luck with RROD on one or the other of our 360’s!) and I just thought they deserved a shout out. Here’s to good service in all game shops in the future!

I’ll never forget a surprisingly honest answer Ready Up’s very own Dan once received in a Computer Exchange store in London, on enquiring about a suspiciously cheap Star Wars game.

Dan: “Is the price of this game a reflection of it’s quality?”
CEX bloke: “Actually, for that game I’d say it’s a rip-off.”

The lads in my local Gamestop are all pretty sound, and they’re always on the ball for recommendations. Here’s to sound people behind the gaming counter!

It’s nice to go into a shop where the people selling the games actually know what the games are like. Back home where my parents live there used to be a small gaming shop that I frequented where they played games while working as part of their jobs. There are too many places now that have no clue about what they are selling.

Sounds very similar to my own town centre in scunthorpe. Theres about 4 different game shops and 3 market-stalls and I almost always end up buying from Gamestation thanks to the wonderful customer support and good prices.

In stark contrast Gamesters prices are ridiculous and GAME’s staff are all mostly snotty tits who seem to know nothing about games… 😛

    I double Pete’s comment! Raise a toast!

I have to agree 100% with Zoey. I live near enough to Worthing (in Lancing) for it to be my main shopping area when there’s something I want to buy and I usually like to shop around before visiting Gamestation just incase anyone else has a decent offer on new release games.

Even when I go into Gamestation with a better offer in mind, they always offer to price match it anyway but I usually don’t mind paying extra for the service. I even had a conversation about tax and politics whilst we discussed a Wii console deal at Christmas and for me, that’s the difference between Gamestation and GAME – Gamestation staff are human beings!
