I liked the free roaming and the use of what is essentially jobs, which is way old FF. I'm borrowing Blue Dragon from a friend and I'm nearly done with it. About 55 hours in now. It isn't original, but it's good fun. I actually had Eternal Sonata sitting on my table to play and returned it to its owner. I really enjoy Final Fantasy, all of them, but some more than others. Traded as soon as the game was completed. Unfortunately I find it disappointing. I'm also partly fed up with never-ending Final Fantasy turned based clones. Yes FF7 was awesome back in the day but there are too many samey games! However I recommend Eternal Sonata. It's brought something new to RPG.
